We painted our mudroom floors & you guys have been obsessed with them!! I had the itch to try out a pattern on our floors and felt super inspired by checkered patterns also known as harlequin. Most of the ones I saw on Pinterest were black and white & as much as I loved that … It felt like a bit too extreme of contrast in our house. So we decided to try it out with a beige and off-white!

Our Paint Colors

We used Benjamin Moore Feather Down (light color) & Benjamin Moore Grant Beige (dark color) for our patterned floors in the mudroom. I absolutely loved the way this turned out & we are so excited to share this DIY with you guys! We decided to do this pattern in our mudroom & guest bathroom, but honestly, I love them so much I could also see us painting this pattern throughout our entire house! If you aren’t looking to add the pattern to your entire flooring I think the patterned floors would be great for a hallway, laundry room, deck, or kids room. We shared a few weeks ago some common FAQ’s when it comes to painting the floors and I recommend reading through that first before you start on the design layout, you can read all about how to paint floors (here). So now let’s get into the DIY process!

Before you lay the design

To start, you have to paint the floors with one of the current colors that you will be using in your pattern. We decided to use the darker color first, for no particular reason.

A quick lesson learned

Before I talk about the process of getting these squares on the floor, if I were to do it again, I would build a template to make the process go a lot faster. We ended up tapping the squares, and once you got in the groove of it, it did not go too bad. Taping ensured that the lines were crisp and we were able to lay out the squares by using a laser level and other tools we listed below:

Okay lets dive in!

To start our first line of squares, we referenced the center of the backdoor. We placed a laser level at the center of the door, and shot it back toward the bathroom door. From here we measured out 18 inch by 18 inch squares. Once we had the first row of squares, they helped layout the remainder of the room. We used [This level] to lay out all of the squares on the floor. We set our laser level up on a Tri-pod, but you could set yours on the floor or raise it up depending on the room you are working on.

Obviously every room size, and square preference will be different, but taping with the laser was super accurate and the biggest time spent was on the taping and the prep work. But again, you could make a stencil out of cardboard or another stiff material and it could go a lot quicker. There are so many different methods to do this floor, but this was ours.

We used a tape measure to spot check to make sure our measurements stayed consistent through out the entire process. With the laser on and a line projected on the floor, we would place painters tape along side the line. Once we had one direction, we changed sides and did the opposite side of the diamond or harlequin. Repeat these steps down through the room until you have all of your diamonds placed on the floor.

Next, we came back through with a sharp box cutter knife to cut away any extra painter tape.I gave all the edge a second press with my fingers to ensure the painters tape wouldn’t bleed and keep the edges night a straight. Once all the tape was on the floor we painted the diamonds with a small paint roller and brush.
