You guys have been patiently waiting for updates on a few rooms in our house & honestly, that’s the reality of living in a fixer-upper. Nothing is ever complete … We have so many projects started & can’t complete them all at once. But I really wanted to give you guys an update on our mudroom. This is one area of our home I wanted to update for so long & I’m so excited to share the progress with you guys!

Here is a little glimpse at our back hallway before. So dark & not our style at all:

We did some major updates to the mudroom with the help of our contractor. First, we expanded the room four feet into the back living room. You can see what this back living room looked like HERE. Nearly all of our guests enter our home through this mudroom, so we really wanted to expand this space.

When we expanded the mudroom we took out closets on both sides of the back entryway. We really didn’t utilize the closet space [this house has a lot of closets] so they were filled more with junk than anything else! Taking out these closets really opened up this space. I wish I would have taken a photo of how messy the closets really were. It was embarrassing.

The flooring used to be faux brick in the back hall. We were always told that it was real brick and that it would be really difficult to take out. But with the help of our contractor, we quickly discovered that it was faux brick. It was still a lot of work to remove but far easier than removing real brick. We decided to match the floor to the rest of our house! We laid pine boards over sub floor like we did in the rest of the house. You can check out how we painted our floors [HERE].

I wanted to try something a little different in the mudroom so we went with vertical shiplap in here! You guys know I love shiplap & have it all throughout our home … But we had only ever done horizontal shiplap. I love that the vertical shiplap in here gives the room a slightly different look & looks really good with the peg rail we added in! & as always I love the texture it gave to the walls.

Our plan is to add peg rail to all of the walls in the mudroom. One wall is all for hanging our coats, bags, and winter accessories! On the wall by our bathroom, I have a few more decor style items hanging from the peg rail.

Doors: We replaced the exterior door in the mudroom. Our old door wasn’t staying sealed very well so there was a constant draft coming in. And if it wasn’t shut properly the door would open. Our new door matches our cozy cottage style home a lot better as well! I love all the light it lets in to the mudroom, but we still need to paint it.. more on that later! The two French doors in the mudroom that are taped up currently lead to the “back living room” once those are painted we will take the tape off. The door leading to the bathroom needs to be replaced now because it’s too high off the ground after we took the brick up, more on that later as well.

Jose’s latest project in the mudroom has been building a shoebox! We really wanted a space that we could store our shoes, without leaving them all over the floor back here. We will have a DIY for the shoe box up on the blog next week for you guys in case you wanted to build your own! Here is all our progress in the mudroom for now, I will be back soon with the completed space to show you guys!
