Another dream of Jose and mine has come true this weekend! We are proud new owners of an Airstream! I know, if mounds of projects weren’t high enough, lets add vintage camper to the mix… but there is a funny story about this camper and our farmhouse I will share. But first, look how cute she is!
This exact Airstream was a dream to own, and then quickly haunted our dreams. So years-years ago, I’m talking North Carolina time. My great aunt and uncle had mentioned that they were considering getting rid of this airstream. We told them, that if they ever decided to sell the Airstream, we would love to have an opportunity to purchase.
As the years went on, it appeared we were the only family members that were interested in the tin can, so it was almost an unspoken understanding that we would purchase the camper. Years and years went on, and they still were planning trips with the camper and were not quite ready to part with the camper. Jose and I moved home to Michigan and things got busy very quickly, with fixing up that house and starting our store, The Found Cottage.
We were in the middle of buying the farm, when my great aunt and uncle reached out, looking to sell the camper. Jose and I both looked at each other, so torn… This dream camper we could put our touch on and take lifelong memories, but we were jumping head first into our farmhouse and not knowing how it was going to impact our budget. With our throats tight, we told them we would have to pass on the camper. And from that moment, we have always regretted passing on the Airstream. My great aunt and uncle passed the Airstream on one of their kids, and we were happy that it stayed in the family but so sad we couldn’t take our family out on adventures.
Over the last year we have been on a hunt for an Airstream, its been a huge dream of Jose’s to work on one and I have always wanted to design one… all of the Airstreams that came across were in pretty rough shape, and the Michigan winters weren’t kind to it.
Earlier this year… the universe aligned and we were having dinner with my parents and my great aunt and uncle. And the words that took my breath away, they turned and asked if we by chance were still interested in that old Airstream of theirs. Umm… YES! The explained that, their son brought it home, and had time to use it and it was just sitting around being unused. We told them, them that we would be over the moon happy to take it off their hands…
And here she is, in all of her 1971 glory. This is a 1971 Airstream Trade Wind Double. Currently it is nearly all original, with the exception of the floors and a few modifications that was made over the years by my great aunt and uncle.
The exterior is in really good shape, something that we couldn’t find from our search over the years. The interior currently is functional and everything still runs, but we definitely want to put our touch on this beauty.

It is a great Airstream. I know you will fix it so cute. I think Destiny or Fate would be a good name for this beauty. It was meant to be yours and with some kindness and patience it is now yours to make pretty. Good luck and have lots of fun re loving this to your style.

How exciting! We just got back off vacation in NC with our 2002 remodeled airstream! We had so much fun! We love ours even though we only use it about 1x month. Hoping to use it more one day in retirement.

You are going to have so many good adventures. My mom and dad bought one when they retired years ago sold their home and traveled all over US untill they parked it in Boulder City, NV. They had the best times of their life. Enjoy your newfound friend and begin making memories with your family.

Congratulations you guys! Can’t wait to see it after you put your touches on it! I liked cope a cabana! ( especially if you give it some striped awnings!! ) Our first r.v. Was little, and we took it to a casino that had a park you could stay ,that was a ways away from casino, so riding their shuttle bus back to park, people were laughing at our “little bundle of joy” and as we pulled up, someone said ,it looks the same as that big one next to it, looks like the big one burped! Thus, it stuck, we named it the burp! Our second one was easy,..The belch, because a belch is longer than a burp! Happy voyages!

My Grandparent’s had an AirStream just like this that they went from Michigan to Texas each winter! They also had it in the 70’s and 80’s till they were getting too old and frail to go south anymore. I think you should call it Silver Lady because she is beautiful and you will be making her even more beautiful! Enjoy this project, can’t wait to see what you do!
