So we made some major moves in our home the past few weeks. After falling in love with opening up our ceiling in our kitchen… we finally pulled that design choice into the rest of the house, yes we tore out our ceilings throughout the entire main floor.

During this process we have had so many people message, asking why we decided to take them out, because they are debating doing it too. Well, I will say, like most design, it is not for everyone. If you are on the fence of going down this path, we are going to cover a few reasons why we love this look!

The Power of the Eye

When everything is said and done, you are only gaining a few inches up from where the drywall was, but with the power of the eye, the room feels like it gains feet. Once painted, the floor joists create leading lines that can feel like they don’t end. This naturally allows your eye to run up-forever brightening up the room-making it feel much taller and bigger than it truly is.

Being Open for Change

This is organically by design and not part of the plan. We haven’t made any remodels to our bathrooms upstairs, still flipping and flopping with design. Nonetheless, we can see all of the plumbing from below, making our remodel very accessible and easier to see what we are able to do. We have already added/moved lighting electrical boxes too. We did get asked if the sound has changed… can we hear more upstairs or downstairs? No, in fact Cope’s bedroom is right above the sunroom where we spend most of our time and movie night. And being in his room, you cannot hear anything from his room.

Customizable and Rustic

You can add elements to get a more curated rustic look with historic features. Some of the things that come to mind are adding floor joist cross bracing or planking/tongue and grooving the flat areas between the joists. It is no secret that I love deconstructed furniture so this look brings in the style a little bit more.

Reversible

At the end of all this, you can undo and put ceiling material (drywall, tin, tongue and groove) back up.

We started painting the old office/dinning room space… and instantly the space grew. We highly recommend spraying over brush and roller… the many faces and little corners and crevices makes rolling and brushing a bit of a challenge. Overall we are so excited to get into these spaces and get some fun new inspirational looks for the upcoming fall and holiday seasons.
