I have had SO MUCH fun sharing our little Grace with you on Instagram, Facebook, & here on the blog. Thank you for making this experience with our newborn lamb even more special. Thank you!!! One thing that comes with having a newborn lamb in your house is a LOT of questions. I wanted to answer some of those today here on the blog for those of you who are confused, curious, or just as obsessed with Grace as we are. If you have any more questions leave them below & I will try to answer them as best as I can! So, here are some questions we have been getting about our little baby Grace….

How did Grace come into your life?

When did you decide to get sheep? 

That’s a hard one to answer. Jose and I always dreamed of having a farm since the day [maybe before] we got married. It was always a goal. Every animal is out on the table as an option because quite frankly we are animal lovers and wish we could take them all in. Well, when we moved to the farm I said right away that all of our animals have to come to us organically or we may end up with 1,000 animals one day. Sheep was always at the top of the list of things we would like to have here on the farm & when my friend Abby’s sheep were going to have lambs.. that was our organic opportunity. I can’t wait to see what organically comes to our farm next. haha

Is Grace a goat? 

Nope. She’s an icelandic sheep. But I see the confusion.. you are not alone.

Why is that sheep in your house?

LOL this one makes me laugh out loud because I get it. There is a sheep in our house. It’s weird. Honestly it never seemed weird to me until someone asked & then I snapped back to reality and was like oh ya.. this isn’t normal. Well, Grace was rejected by her mother as a newborn & so we adopted her quite early from my friend Abby’s farm so that we could bottle feed her and care for her. I became like her momma & we have bonded quite quickly. She comes in the house so that she can be around us and the dogs and not always be so lonely in the barn.

Where does Grace sleep?

Grace sleeps in the barn in her stall now. Most people think she is in the house full time, but sadly she isn’t.

Does Grace where a diaper? 

Yes. I know in some photos you can’t tell, but whenever she is in the house she wears a diaper because she is not house trained. I wish!!

What does Grace eat? 

Right now she is getting a bottle 4 times a day & she has started to eat grain, hay, & like a big girl in our pasture.

How long will Grace be in the house? 

Since she only comes to visit us in the house & is only in the house for an hour-ish a day it’s not a huge deal, but I’m sure this will end soon as she gets bigger.

When are her other sheep friends joining her? 

They will hopefully be here this week! They are about two & a half months older than her so it should be really interesting. I will be sure to document them coming to our farm & how that all goes. They are two boys [one fixed male & one ram] so when they are ready they will be able to make little lambs later on.

Does Grace get a long with your dogs & cats?

Yes! She just adores them all. She especially has grown close to the cats. The cats spend the entire day with her & they also sleep with her at night. I think she might think that she is a cat herself. The dogs don’t mind her, but they area also not obsessed with her. I’m content with that.

Does Grace chew your furniture? 

Luckily no she has not started chewing your furniture. BUT that doesn’t mean she isn’t naughty. She is a curious little thing and gets into a lot so I do need to keep my eye on her while she is in the house & that’s why she only comes in for a little bit at a time.

How big will Grace get?

She will be around 150 pounds most likely. WOW. She’s going to be so big. That makes me want to go outside and pick her up while I can. Can you believe that?

How often will you have to shave her? 

Twice a year most likely. We will probably be hiring professionals so that we can use her wool for things & so that she is pretty lol.

What is happening to Grace’s siblings? 

As some of you know, Grace was [is] a triplet. The mom took to the other two, but rejected Grace. We will not be getting her siblings as we did not want a ton of sheep and we had already chosen the twins that were born before the triplets. Also, we would have to separate Grace from her siblings during mating season as that is not an ideal occurrence. They will be going to a wonderful farm as well.

 

I hope this answered some of your questions about Grace & helps you feel a little more connected to her. We are just so in love with her & she has brought so much joy to our farm. It’s been a lot of work with bottle feedings & adjusting her to farm life, but it’s been very rewarding & an experience that I will never ever forget.
