Here we go… Part one of our floor finishing series. Buckle up! It’s going to be a messy ride. Ok, so I thought about doing everything in one big post, but I think breaking it down will be a little better. As many of you know we put 8 inch pine plank boards throughout a majority of the lower level of our farmhouse that I blogged about [HERE]. Now is the hard part… we need to decide how we are going to finish them. Paint, wax, stain, a mixture of both, oil, and the list goes on. You guys it’s been keeping me up at night! So, I came up with a plan. We had put the pine flooring in our dining room, front living room, soon they will be installed in the kitchen, & in the back guest bedroom. Since I had planned on painting the pine floors in the back guest bedroom anyways I am going to use that floor as the guinea pig to test out all the paints, stains, & all the combinations of things. When we are done we will just pick the floor paint color we want to use for that room & cover it all up. So today is round one & I tested out 7 paint colors to start & here is what I ended up with…

Here are the paint swatches on the floor far away and a little closer up. Now of course these paint colors are going to look so different at different times of day, but this was around 7pm at night when the sun is shining pretty bright in this room so I thought it was a good time to capture the colors. This room also only has one very small window so the light is spread evenly, but you get the idea. Well, out of these 7… I love just one. & I love it hard. Farrow & Ball Lime white is where my heart is at. It’s a taupey white that is a little warm, but not too warm or yellow. I think that this color would actually look great throughout our entire home with our white walls. By the way all these samples are in flat, but we would be doing more of a satin finish floor paint so that does change things a tiny bit & will add a little more life to the colors. All the colors are great in their own way, but I really love the lime white the best. I feel like the others are either too blue, too green, & just not what I was thinking. So here is test one. Round one. Phase one. Whatever you want to call it. I will be back with more paint & stain samples soon & possibly different photos from different times of the day to show you the difference that makes… I’m also thinking of doing larger areas of the floor with some of my favorite swatches to show you what they look like independently by themselves & in a bigger area. My eye went immediately to Lime White, but the name threw me off and I started looking for green undertones, which I don’t see. I think it’s a perfect color! Whatever you decide will be beautiful!
Maritime White the warm undertones will compliment neutrals and wood tones very nicely. And it simply feels cozy.
I am loving Maritime or Lime White! Were these pine floors much less expensive than going the traditional hardwood floor plank route? I love the imperfect look of these! Great choice!
Lime white was my choice as well. Second was maritime white.
I’m sorry sad knowing that you decided to paint instead of stain. I think the stain makes everything pop and is more “mature” looking. But it’s not my house (as much as I want it to be. Lol) and I have to get over it. lol I’m sure whatever you do will turn out beautiful.

I like Old White the best, but I’m not a huge fan of light-footed floors. I think any of them will look great.
LOVE painted wood floors! And your color choice is perfect. I’m also curious about pine versus traditional hardwoods, cost-wise. We need to make some flooring changes and this might be a good option for us. 🙂
FB Lime White was the one that I liked right away! If you don’t stain, I would choose that color.

Good morning! What a tough decision. My niece painted her floors white and they look awesome!!! We used wood from an old barn door and used it for one of our rooms and put a sealer on it. I love that as well…I posted the floor on IG year @vintagethruthyme…thank you for sharing! Lori

I love the Maritime white, it is subtle enough to not take all the attention, but also adds a nice depth to the floor. Plus it gives a warmth and coziness to a room full of white!
Strong white is my favorite with lime white coming in close second!

Lime wbite
This is not related to the white color selection (although I love Lime White as well, it’s amazing!). We have an old 1900 home and it took me a very long time to find a stain color that almost perfectly matches the old wooden pine doors and trim. It’s Varathane Early American. We stained our butcher block countertop, stairway railing, and open shelving this color and it really is the closest match to our aged pine (and an all-around beautiful color). Just in case you are doing some rooms in a stain.
Loved the Lime first thing. I have the darker one on my front/back porch and it looks great outdoors in the light, but maybe a little too dark for interior. Ferrell Calhoun is the best. I have used it on my old floors in our main room for years.
I like the strong white too.
Lime white first then maritime!!!
Of all the selections, in MI with the days very dark and short in the winter, I would pick one of the the three brightest whites. Creek villa looks like my great grandmother’s painted enclosed porch floors in KY. In my home in FL, Maritime would be my pick. Whatever you pick, it will be fine. we lived in MI for 12 years and I brightened every room to decrease the darkness of the winter.
Liz – are all your paint samples made in Behr paint – is the color match Farrow & Ball in their computer? (or would I have to take in a sample, or the formula?)

Totally agree with Lime White, that was my choice before I read further to see yours. It’s interesting when you put them all together how other colors are pulled out. What ever you choose to do with the floors, your place is going to look awesome!

Lime white is the best color but natural pine would be my choice. Your taste is amazing so it will look great no matter what.
Lime White, no Question! My eye went straight to it. It looks cozy and a good neutral.
