It happened today. A HUGE step in our farmhouse fixer upper. We got flooring installed in our downstairs guest bedroom. It’s the first of many rooms that are going to get new flooring & I’m a little excited. We haven’t made any huge steps in this house in a long time, but that’s all about to change. We started in the guest bedroom this week & they are already moving into the front living room & dining room already tomorrow. I haven’t really talked about it a whole lot, but we have been considering getting all new flooring for some time now through out the whole lower level of the home, but I wanted something rustic & true to our 1800’s farmhouse….
A wide plank rustic pine floor. That’s what we went with. We chose 8 inch rough pine boards with large nail heads for detail. Not tongue & groove or anything fancy just straight up pine boards from the lumbar yard. Actually, I wanted to go wider, but we were told there was too much risk, so we settled on the 8inch and it’s honestly perfect. Sometimes you have to reign my dreams in a little bit & that’s ok. After searching different flooring types I really felt like our farmhouse needed some rustic pine floors & so here we go! It’s hard to show you “beauty shots” in this space because all of the trim is torn off the floor & windows, but you get the idea. Now the big question is here: Do we paint or stain the floor? Now, this is the back guest bedroom that can be done differently than any of the other rooms. The front living room, dining room, kitchen, & sunroom will all have pine flooring like this, but I will want all of those floors to look the same whether painted or stained because they are all in connecting rooms. Long story short: These guest bedroom floors can be painted or stained differently than the rest of the lower level. I would love to hear what your opinion is. I will be back later this week with some paint & stain samples that I’m thinking of the floors to show you guys what I’m thinking. The floor feels so solid & comfortable to stand on & I’m so happy with our decision. I think these floors will really set the tone for our entire house & we will finally cover up all the holes we have in the floors after ripping the carpet out… I’m so excited that we are getting closer to finally having a few finished spaces in this farmhouse of ours. I mean, we are still very far, but starting the flooring is getting us so much closer! Your floors are gorgeous and something I’ve always wanted for my own home. They are so beautiful in their natural state; could you just put a sealer or oil finish, or whatever they do over natural wood.?
I would leave them this color and just do a clear coat stain for protection. It’s a beautiful color as is. Why change it? If is a soft flooring color to marry in with your white. You can get too much white, or too dark of a stain. This looks really pretty!! The only other suggestion would be to pickle the floor, but you might not be able to do that now that the floor is already down. Great pick for the flooring! I am excited for you!!
Stain, stain, stain! it would be so beautiful in that farm house, I love the wide boards. I remember an old home having those wide boards where I babysat as a teenager and it was breath taking everytime I saw them!
Stain! It’ll give that extra pop and would be a beautiful contrast with your decor
Maybe go with stain. That way you can live with it and if you ever change your mind, painting over stain is easy. But the reverse is not so easy – stripping paint and then staining…
Either way, it’s beautiful. Even raw wood is gorgeous.
Because I am eminently practical, I would say keep them all the same. They look great!

Your home is absolutely beautiful!!! Now about the floors, I would white wash the livingroom floors, that way you can see character of the wood and stain the guest bedroom floor. Not to dark, something light. I’m sure what ever you come up with will be absolutely gorgeous.
Those floors are so beautiful! Personally, I would stain all of the rooms the same color, and then paint over the stain in the guest room. That way when the paint gets scuffed, the underlying stain color shows through. I would use a medium, warm brown that is true to the time period of the house.
A light stain or perhaps an oil like Maria of Dreamy Whites used would be beautiful. I believe homes with a lot of white need natural wood tones to balance and compliment.

I like the idea of continuity, so I’d do the guest room the same as what you’re planning on the rest of the downstairs.
I would do a medium stain. Gorgeous!!!
I’m not sure if you follow Holly Smallwood yet, but you should really go checkout her Facebook page. Look at her album titled “building our farm” scroll until you see her floors. They remind me of yours a bit. She just used a light stain and sealed them and they are gorgeous! Go check it out!
My husband and i have been discussing doing this for months the now. I just love the wide planks. We are thinking Tung oil in a natural….with oil you can maintain the floors a little easier. Painting would also be cool, but I vote no for stain. Good luck!

I think a very very light stain, maybe just an oil sealant would be beautiful. Think of a beautiful pale but rustic lived in Scandinavian floor ?

I would paint the guest bedroom a light creamy white…if that makes sense…and stain the rest of the conncecting rooms…of course this room would look good stained too…but the light white paint would be cool…but stain would warm it up…but it’s different that the living areas that will be stained…guess I’m not much help❣️❣️❣️❤️ I just know that whatever you decide will look beautiful! Your decorating is absolutely awesome! You steal my ❤️!!!
I agree with the other comments: light stain or white wash!!! Wouldn’t go darker, but they already look gorgeous!!!! Love following y’all’s story!!!!
First let me say that I love painted wood. But this time I think a natural or light stain would be lovely with all of your other features.

Hey friend. We built a farmhouse last year and did our best to honor the turn of the century farmhouse vibes. We did #2 soft pine, face nailed, boards that were a mixture of 8, 10, 12 inches. (We went with the poor farmer route where the poorer farmers back then used the entire tree) anyways, we did a stain and then used Woca Oil on them. Check it out as an option!!!! I love them the way they are…light and airy. I’d give them a sealer, but keep them natural.
Please don’t paint them! In a few years, worn, mellowed pine floors will be one of your favorite things in your home.

Stain these floors!!!!! They are gorgeous and perfect for your house. Painted floors (as someone who had them for years in our farmhouse) is so much up keep. We finally striped them down and stained. I have never looked back.

I think you would be happy with a stained or natural pine floor. Our study is all pine including a lightly stained pine floor. It’s a warm, totally different look from the rest of our house & I love its uniqueness

I would vote stained in the main areas- maybe pickled, or a warm wood- I love our floor color, its a warm wood tone, not too dark and not red or orange. I would paint the guest room floors… dare I suggest a muted pastel 🙂 Perhaps a mint…Have fun! Looking forward to seeing some of the options.

I love the idea of keeping consistent treatment all over the house! The photos would be great to see of the mixture of widths, Melissa, w/ the stain and Woca Oil…how can I see that? Maybe it could be posted here. The ones above are gorgeous in the normal way today, which is great also, but would like to see them w/ a bit of stain and light color, no paint!
I love light color, a simply light-stained wooden floor- we have a bit darker stain in our beach house, (that we are selling asap), and it is simply gorgeous…very natural, but want a bit lighter stain all-over in our farmhouse; we need first to sell the beach house. We are going to price it out to do it all at one time while we have a lot of our things and main furniture out and put into storage. Any idea how much a square foot estimate finished is?? Anyone? Thanks, dreaming of bare feet on wood with my mom’s Orientals scattered about.
