Hi friends!!! Happy first day of summer! If you missed it on my Instagram or Facebook this past weekend, we are finally all moved out of our old house & now are full time at our new [very old] farm. We haven’t even started to unpack yet, but that can wait. We are excited to get settled in & slowly start to make this farm our homestead. Before we left our last house because it happened so suddenly, I had started to decorate for summer, & I have already added a few summer pieces to this house as well [because you know of course I’ve put things out even before we’ve painted] that are summer-y because I couldn’t help myself. So, when I was asked to join a lovely summer home tour by Nina Hendrick Design, Birch Lane, the wonderful Country Living Magazine, along with a bunch of other awesome bloggers, I thought since we are in the middle of our move, I would share 5 tips to decorate your home for summer. I hope these tips help you decorate your home for summer & that you enjoy seeing some photos from our home we just left this week & our new farmhouse we just moved in to…

 

-Add greenery

Whether you go faux or you get some real plants, adding greenery instantly gives summer vibes in a home. I like to mix faux & real greenery like in our upstairs living room at our last house I added real topiaries along with faux greenery from Ikea. Nothing says summer like some fresh flowers or greens!

-lighten up

Lighten up those rooms. If you have dark sofas, consider throwing some lighter slipcovers on them, or get some lighter & brighter pillow covers. Paint a dark piece of furniture that has been bugging you for a while, add some fresh bright curtains, & on & on. You don’t have to do all of these things of course, but it always feels more like summer in the house when things are lightened up. I painted our coffee table base in our downstairs living room & a large armoire in our entryway a lighter color & it really set the mood for the warmer season.

-Go patriotic

This is a very fun way to decorate for The Fourth Of July, but patriotic decor can be used throughout the whole summer. I purchased a few pieces from Birch Lane that can be used in patriotric decor & I’m a little obsessed. I’m ususally a neutral loving girl, so to find some pieces that were neutral, but still patriotic was amazing. I found this distressed burlap flag pillow [here] & this amazing grainsack poof [here]. I styled them each inside & outside at our new house to show you a few different ways you can use them. Of course patriotic decor can be used all year, but it really does give your home a summer vibe.

 

– Freshen up

Most of the time we think of  “spring cleaning”, but personally I do more cleaning going in to the summer season. Probably because of the spring in Michigan is unpredictable, but open those windows, shake those rugs out, get rid of the clutter, & you will be surprised at how fresh & summery your spaces will feel.

– Summer up all your spaces.

This may seem redundant, but there are so many ways to add summer to your spaces & it may be overwhelming. Here are some places to start: Add greenery to your coffee table, dining table, & entryway table centerpieces. If you want to go crazy, add some fresh flowers in vases in all of your rooms, honestly just that makes a room feel lighter, brighter, & more inviting. Add a summer wreath to your doors, lighten up your furniture, add a summer quote to your gallery walls or chalkboards, add pops of white & bright colors to your rooms where you can, & switch our your cozy textiles like throw blankets & pillows for thinner & & lighter fabrics. Add a potting bench or some flower pots to your outdoor spaces & freshen up your patios & porches just like the inside of your home. Just a few ways to make your home feel more like summer.
