It’s fun to try new things as a blogger over the years. New projects, new room designs, new furniture, new DIY projects, new decor, & so on. But sometimes it’s fun to stick with the classics. The classic projects that you once did & want to do again & the classic home decor that you love. This past week I wanted to get back to the basics with one of our projects from way back on the blog.. maybe 3 or 4 years ago… when we made a simple wood box centerpiece. Of course each time we make it there are fresh ideas mixed into it. This week I wanted to create a rustic box centerpiece with rope handles. Simple, fresh, & a fun build for our dining room centerpiece…
So simple & lovely right? You may remember some of these that we have made in the past, but they always turn out so different so it’s fun to try new twists on a classic project. Honestly the build is so easy, but we did it like this…
I used a 1 x 6 piece of pine, cut the two long pieces to 34.5 inches and the skinnier sides to 18 inches, making the entire inside 36 (34.5 inches plus the thickness of the ends which is 3/4 inches each) by 18 inches. For the bottom, I use the remainder of the 1 x 6 board and cut it to the inside length and width with a JigSaw I used clamps to hold it all together & then screwed all the boards together. I measured out the holes 4 1/2 inches from each side 2 inches down from the top. I painted the box with Maison blanche hurricane & sealed it with dark wax. I love the look that the combo gave me. To finish out the project I tied some twine that I had through the holes on each end that we created earlier. The rope adds a finished rustic look to the box. I filled the box with three flameless candles & some greenery I had from Michaels. Such an easy classic look.
I’m seriously so in love with how it turned out. Maybe I’ll make a bunch more in different colors. It felt good to do a fun DIY project that took minimal effort. We made some of these for our store as well, The Found Cottage, so I’m excited to see what our customers do with them as well. Who doesn’t love a good wooden box? So many possibilities! I’ve been thinking I need to build one of these for our dining table, too, only I would probably paint ours antique white and distress it, perhaps add chunkier rope for handles? Thanks for sharing such a cute, timeless, and simple project idea! Always love your creativity.
Could you share where you found the Maison blanche hurricane & dark wax? For me, the hardest part to doing these projects is find the supplies. Thank you.
