Today’s post is all about something that I have been wanting to do for a while now. I had intentions of trying this before Christmas, but life got busy & I forgot all about it. No, it’s nothing big, but it’s something that I knew would make me happy & it’s the simple things in life that are the best right? Today I’m blogging about my DIY stovetop potpourri that I finally made & tested out & oh my goodness, if you have never tried stovetop potpourri, you need to! What prompted me to finally make this was when I was at the grocery store the other day they had cranberries on clearance which is the main ingredient I wanted to include in my potpourri. So, I threw them in my cart & a few other simple ingredients & made it the second I got home.

It’s been the first week of snow here in Michigan so it’s the perfect week to make our house smell cozy & warm like the best candle you have ever smelled in your life. I had seen a few recipes around the internet for stovetop potpourri & thought I was a complete nerd for wanting to try it, but OH MY GOODNESS it actually worked. & if you know me at all than you would know that most things I do in the kitchen ever turn out so this was an exciting day. I let this simmer in our house all morning while we were drinking our coffee & it was so comforting. & when we got home after a long cold day I turned the stove on again & let it simmer, it’s simmering now as we speak, & it instantly smells like you are making every Christmas pie you can think of. The bad part? You may get hungry from how amazing it smells. This stovetop potpourri is as great or better than the best candles out there & the best part is it can be re-used over and over again. I say it’s a must try at least once on these cold wintery days.

The beauty of stovetop potpourri is that you can use items in your pantry that you already have & there is no specific recipe that you must follow. I used 2 cups of cranberries, one orange sliced up [you could use only the peels], vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, rosemary [you can use pine needles as well], & some other lovely pinches of spices as well. I added water to cover all the ingredients in the pan & set it on the stove on low to let it simmer. That’s it. No stirring, no babysitting it [of course monitor it so that there is no fire hazards], but it’s really the most low maintenance thing ever. I let it go for around 3 hours & then refrigerate when I’m not using. When I want to use it again I’ll add more water to it & let it simmer. You can search the web for more recipes for this & other ways to use it, but this is my experience so far & I love how it turned out. I can’t wait to do this when we have a gathering at our house.

All in all I am so glad I finally tried to make my own stovetop potpourri. In so many ways it’s better than a candle because of it’s way of smelling the entire house so quickly & adding very potent warm and coziness to every crevice of your home with it’s natural ingredients. The smell lingers for so long even after it’s done simmering. I am a candle lover & of course use them daily in our home & won’t be making stovetop potpourri daily so candles are still my favorite jam, but after trying this stovetop recipe I will be doing it more often in the cold weather months for sure! My experience is very short since today was my first time trying it, but if you want more lengthy reviews or other opinions I suggest searching it online.
