I was recently introduced to a life changing book. You know one of those books that makes you stop and think about something & then rethink that something & then keep thinking about that something. Yah, that kind of book. We all know I’m obsessed with all things home. I think about all things home decor, design, & DIY all day everyday, but sometimes we need to re-think all of our favorite things. We need to step back & look at the big picture & this book made me do just that. What book am I talking about? well, it’s a book by the lovely blogger, Melissa, from the Inspired Room. I have been a long time lover of her blog & now I’m a huge fan of her book as well. Her book is called Love The Home You Have & it’s filled.. I mean filled.. with tips & tricks on how to love the home you already have. Often times we complain about our homes & we point out what is wrong, but this book shows how to love your home, it shares tips & tricks on little things you can do to love your home more, & it really goes deep into things you have never thought of about your home. The book is also filled with challenges at the end of the book [31 day love your home challenge] It’s filled with daily challenges on ways to love your home.

I chose day 30 which is “Paint Something” not a huge surprise for me right? But, hear me out. There is one project I have been putting off for well, years. It’s the simplest of all projects, but for some reason I just never did it. Maybe because I thought it was too simple? Maybe I didn’t think it would make a huge impact in our house? Well, either way, I did it, I painted it, & it’s so lovely in our home now. This DIY large chalkboard made me love our home even more than I did…

I’m a quote person. Quotes motivate me. Quotes drive me. Quotes make me think about things differently. So having this chalkboard in our home where we can put lovely quotes on that fit our lives in the moment. & this quote is quite fitting & I love it. & I love Him. Ok.. stop getting to deep Liz. It’s a DIY chalkboard. It’s crazy how these little things can make us think & make us change the way we feel about our homes. I guess I knew this & felt this before with all of our 1,000 home projects we have done, but I’m grateful for Mellissa’s book for reminding me of all that again.

So, how did we make our large DIY chalkboard. Wouldn’t you like to know! Just kidding! Of course I’m here to tell you how we did it. It’s super simple & it’s one of those projects you can make in an afternoon & you will love it forever & ever.

First I took a piece of plywood I picked up at Home Depot. No cuts, no work, just the size that they offered right at the store. It’s 2ftx 4ft.

I then painted the piece of plywood with two layers of chalkboard paint that I picked up at Target. Yes, that’s right. Target carries chalkboard paint apparently & it works great!

For the frame of the chalkboard we cut scrap wood that we had in the garage to the size of the chalkboard. I then stained the boards with Rustoleum wood stain in weathered gray. To attach the frame to the chalkboard I simply used a staple gun. So easy.

After the frame was on & before we drew on the chalkboard I seasoned it by simply rubbing chalk all over the board & then wiping it off. Chalkboard complete!

Oh, how I love this little chalkboard, & oh how I love our bright & cozy home. Thankful for people like Melissa & projects like this that make me fall in love with our home again. From the bottom of my heart I think you should all read this book. It made me look at things totally different & I plan on completing the 31 day challenge as well.
