This blog post isn’t about a tutorial really, but more of an inspiration post to show you how you can make some simple art for your home. For free. On Sunday morning this week I had a few quiet moments while I was drinking my coffee & I decided to create some art with some scrap wood I had. I made a project with an old barn door recently [more on that project later] & I had these lovely scraps lying around that I just couldn’t throw away. So art it was! I decided to make a series of three ampersands because ampersands. duh. Here is my attempt at some DIY barn wood scrap art…
There they are in all their imperfect beauty. I wanted to create some rustic art that didn’t require anything but some paint and a paint brush. Some free handed sunday morning art. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to be messy & informal. I think that’s what keeps my creativity alive. Not taking myself so serious all the time. Or ever for that matter. Trial & error. & always having fun with doing what I love.

Now of course you don’t have to paint ampersands. Maybe I’m the only too obsessed with them, & I’m still trying to find the deeper reason why I am, but until then I’m just sitting here painting ampersands on old barn wood. Again, this post is merely to show you not to throw your scrap wood away because you can make some lovely art with it. To make this ampersand I outlined the character using chalk paint {Maison Blanche} & then filled in the ampersand with the same paint. Ok, did I just insult you intelligence with telling you how I did? I am so sorry. But that’s how I made these little pieces of art.

For a DIY free picture hanger I used some things I already had. I gathered some twine & used my staple gun to attach it to the back of the ampersand art. Too simple? Never!

I don’t know where I’m going to put my ampersand art yet, but I’m sure it will find a little place in our home. I think I may bring two of the pieces to my booth this week because let’s face it I may become an ampersand hoarder if I keep all three. What do you think of my DIY barn wood art? What would you paint on your pieces of barn wood? Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. xx

Don’t you feel just a little smug and self satisfied when you create such an easy cute diy?! I sure would! lol This one is great and I am on my way to check the scrap pile. How about question marks?? Good job.
I love amperdands also. Did you know it was invented in 63 BC as a shorthand for the latin et or and.
I consider myself a “possibilitarian” and an ampersand makes me think of the possibilities of, well, anything.
I suspect you are also one. One of my favorite quotes” Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities — always see them, for they’re always there.”
