I was sitting in our garage recently just creating some new things when I came across a big “oops” I had made when we were leaving our home in North Carolina. I had dropped a window on the ground & glass & the frame of the window shattered everywhere. Of course, me being a hoarder, I kept the shattered wooden window frame knowing that I would use it at a later time. Well, I came across the pieces of window frame & had the perfect idea this week, why not use them to create a unique frame? I had recently painted some experiment antique signs inspired by my “Grand Rapids Antique” sign I painted last year. This time I did more of a hand painted version & didn’t use my silhouette. It’s a messier version & more primitive because let’s face it, I’m not biggest perfectionist on the planet, but I think they turned out pretty good & I can’t wait to keep on experimenting with them. Anyways, this is how my sort of “frankenstein” half window, half hand painted sign turned out…

To create this DIY antique window sign I hand painted the words on the board after drawing them in with pencil. I didn’t want to use my silhouette for this portion because I wanted it to look more hand drawn.. hence I hand drew it. This is on a plywood. For the gray sign, I painted the sign gray, the letters black, & then outlined in white. For the stained sign I first painted the letters black, outlined in white, & then stained over the letters. To make the frames I decided to only frame the top & the bottom with the scrap window parts & the board fit snug into the window frame with glue & some staples. Seriously so easy & only took some creative thinking. {& as I was blogging this I just realized a few mistakes like the fact that I didn’t outline the inside of the “D” on the stained sign. It’s good to be able to laugh at yourself right?}

Well, Bella is tired of me talking about these signs so I guess we will call this post quits. These signs will be available in my booth at The Painted Farmgirl starting tomorrow for anyone who wants to buy one for their home. I am going to keep experimenting with these signs because seriously it’s too much fun. What do you think of my hand painted signs? Not bad for being made out of junk hey?
