Christmas decor comes in all different creative shapes and sizes. You can easily shop around for some new items, check out vintage markets or antique shops for a more cozy rustic approach, regardless of your path, the idea is to personalize the most wonderful time of the year, and showcase your style for your family and incoming guests. If you are like me, each year I like taking a new approach with an entirely new look, but that doesn’t necessarily mean get rid of all of your previous years decor. If you are in Michigan, throw on your snow boots and head to the garage, basement, or attic space, where you store those holiday decor items that you fully intend on brining back the following season, but forget you have it or can’t seem to make it fit. Hunt for those old pieces, and breath life back into those pieces.

Reviving older pieces

We have a handful of vintage sleds in the garage. I collected them for a few different looks over the years, and I am trying to trim down my collection. This one particular sled is so cute, I couldn’t get rid of it, but couldn’t find a good home for it over the past few years as is. I used it in our last home, but I think with its tiny stature and wood tones, it got lost in every vignette I tried to place it in. I wanted to revive this sled, and bring it into the home, and decided that a painted sled would fit perfectly as a lifted centerpiece on our dinning room table. The difference of the painted version verse original, is that you can immediately see the defined lines and edges of the sled. On top of a wood table, it separates itself where it would normally get lost. Other items I have brought back to life, we had this metal Christmas sign. When I bought it new, it had more whimsical colors, brought into my style by painting the sign gold, the sky is the limit, if you look at everything being customizable to pinpoint your exact style.

Don’t Over think your DIY

DIY Christmas Decor is so fun to put together, sometimes it can be DIY’s built from scratch, or sometime the DIY’s can simply be cleaning up an old piece and updating it with a new paint job like we did with this Christmas centerpiece. I know Jose and I, from time to time, over think DIY’s, thinking we have to go over the top, or pull out the material list and build every DIY from scratch. I looked at this old sled that has been collecting dust in the garage not being displayed in any form. Our DIY

We already had the paint, Raw Silk by Mineral Fusion, in the house, making the only cost of this affordable DIY, is our time. I thoroughly cleaned off the sled and set to painting. The rails of this sled are metal, and have so natural pitting and rust flaking, I left it as is, instead of pushing it clean, I wanted to paint overtop and create that gritty texture, I think this separates the sled from that of its newer counterparts that are usually clean and rust free.

Make your Christmas decor your own

Christmas table decor can be very whimsical set as a mini scene from a Christmas village, or it can be simple as a painted sled with vase of Christmas Greens or any other small items of Christmas home decor. Regardless, a piece you have collected many years ago and never found a good home, now is front and center. This affordable Christmas decor DIY doesn’t get any more simple than that, and I encourage you to look around for more items to turn into your own painted Christmas decor. Don’t stop with paint or even with customizable Christmas Decor. Think and apply the same thought to all your home decor throughout the year.
