Oh the home decor shuffle. It’s a daily shuffle around here. Whether we are moving things around to style a space or because we are renovating a room & have to empty it out and find temporary spots for the items. But the one questions I always get is “Why are you always changing things around in your home?” & today I wanted to answer that question for you. There is a few reasons & probably more than I’m listing today, but we will start here for now & maybe give you some insight as to why I’m always changing things around this house & farm of ours…
Let’s start with well, I love trying new things! I want to try them all in fact so that is the issue. What do I mean by this? I love trying out our vintage picks in our home & decide if we will keep them or sell them at our shop. I love trying out new gallery walls [3m stripe are your friends for this!], rearranging furniture, & painting things to get a whole new look. All the things. I love putting together new vignettes & trying out different items in new spots. It’s an addiction & thankfully I have the blog here to document it all with you guys because you all know I’m trying new things all the time & hopefully with each change & trial it inspires someone in some way.
The second reason is where we live. We live in a fixer upper as many of you know. That looks very different to many people, but to us living in a fixer upper looks kind of like this: We are slowly renovating our home. I mean… I see some people who move in and do all the renovating over a year & then they are done. That’s not us. We bought this house knowing that we will be re-doing it for the next 20 years. Probably not that long, but you get my point. We really don’t have a method to our madness, but what we have been doing is gutting one room at a time & slowly working on them as we feel comfortable withe cost & time. When rooms aren’t finished we want them to still be pretty so we temporarily decorate them or try new things in those spaces to see how we finally want them when they are finished. & Sometimes we have even been giving things “temporary makeovers” for example things like the front door… I knew we were getting a new door there eventually, but in the mean time I painted it black because the wood was badly damaged & rotting in places. Doing it this way is more work for sure over time, but it allows us to try new things & have fun while doing it.
The third reason & the biggest reason is that I want to share new ideas & inspirations with you guys. That’s what makes me super passionate about blogging. I want to try new ideas & show you guys my thoughts, opinions, ideas, & trends. But to do all of this it means I change things around often to show you. Sometimes I create little things like a tablescape just to show you an idea & I LOVE doing that, but I get many questions why I always change things & sometimes it makes me feel bad [or maybe guilty is the word?] Like I’m in trouble, but none the less I remind myself of why I do it… to hopefully inspire. You see, I have all these ideas in my head always & the strong urge to try new things & I don’t want to contain it always [Trust me… I do control and hold back from changing and trying many things.] But that’s what brings me joy is trying new things, sharing new ideas, & blogging… it truly does & I hope that when you stop by the blog you feel that joy & you leave feeling a little more inspired or happy than when you came.
I hope this gives you a little insight into my brain [scary… I know] & also explains a few things if you have been wondering… I know we will get to more of a permanent state of our home soon in some rooms & that will be a wonderful feeling. I would love to see and learn your strategy for storing decor. I live in a small apt but I do try to change things up for the seasons and certain ho!idays. However, lack of storage space and a “Jose” to haul it in from the storage room for me limits what I can do quite a bit. Don’t change a thing you do, Liz! I absolutely love your home and all the ideas you share. I especially love Miss Winnie.

I swiped up and read; because I thought it was funny that you were explaining why you change things around. Why not? A friend asked me the same thing and my answer was : “mother nature is constantly redecorating; why would I not do the same”???

The day I started following you I had just finished up redoing the inside of my home, Painting, new flooring, new bath, kitchen, all new decor for my walls the works, and it was the light shades of grey, white, very beachy vibe, now I find myself redoing the walls, adding some greens, clocks, more pillows, and loving your inspiring spirit. I love your comment about your mom always moving stuff around… my mom did the same thing. I helped her shuffle furniture and decor around often to keep it fresh and interesting. She still does the same thing in her 80s. I think she changes things up daily to give her something to do that she loves! I’m sure I inherited that from my mom as well!
Personally, I used to constantly change things around when I had severe anxiety and depression. Now that I’ve got that under control, and am out of an unhappy marriage, I feel less of a need for constant change. It’s a relief that I don’t “have” to anymore. Anyway, you don’t owe anyone an explanation for what you do in your own home. It’s your space and you should always do what makes YOU happy. 🙂

I would love to see your storage ideas for holiday/extra decor pieces! I recently downsized from a 2,500 sq. ft. home to a 1.400 sq. ft. home, and a I’m having a blast decorating my new little house “vintage farmhouse style”, but I do have extra decor pieces that I don’t want to get rid of. I grew up moving every year or two and
we didn’t have our own linens, kitchen items, or furniture. Everything was provided other than our pets and clothes. I think that’s why I get bored with things quickly. I also am addicted to quilts and kitchen bowls. Please dont
change yourself in any way. You are a sweet fun person who people love!

It’s so fun changing and redecorating isn’t it. Sometimes people tell me they want to finish they’re home decor and be DONE! I’d hate the idea of being done! I love always creating ! I have other close friends and kindred spirits who are the same way. You must be one too!

Makes sense and not hard to figure out… trying new things, changing up a corner or a room, keeping a bit of sanity in spots here & there while working on the fixer-upper, making changes & living with them a bit, creating new & varied vignettes, etc. to see how it feels.
Sharing what you do, planting seeds of inspiration, expressing yourself & your passions.
Changing things up also engages your readers, and you do it in top-shelf fashion… changing things up is a brilliant marketing tool, whether intentional or as a positive side effect of you being you.
Your “blogging & Instagram voice” is charming, engaging, and feels like you’re simply sharing one of life’s many everyday stories with friends over a cup of coffee or tea. Well done!

Hi Liz Marie! I find your blog & home decor so inspiring! I’m hoping to come visit your shop when I’m up in MI for July 4th week.. anyways, I need some advice- I’ve been living in my home for a almost a year now and I’m itching to paint, add shiplap & window trim to all my windows (I’ll probably think of more things I want to do as the year goes on). I’m just wondering if you have any advice on how to get my fiancé on board with my vision. I know you & Jose bought the farm house as a fixer upper but before that did you have to convince Jose to get on board with your vision or has he always been a visionary himself? Thanks so much!
I agree keep doing what you love, your very good at it. I’m more of a seasonal/holiday change. But I do change rooms up occassionaly. Once I like it I’m good for years.

Liz, I am the same way. Constantly changing things around, so I love that you do the same thing. After all that is why I follow and subscribe to your blog. You inspire me and countless others to try new things. Though you and a few others I have learned to find my own style and go with it rather than confirming to what is popular. So please do not feel guilty about being passionate about what you love and thankfully sharing with us. You have a gift for making spaces beautiful and comfy cozy and that is what most of us want our homes to be so thank you and please keep up the inspiring work. ❤️

I agree with a previous poster that I would love more ideas on storage and organization. Also maybe some “steal vs splurge” so those who would like to emulate your look but can’t afford the exact same thing can still get something out of your ideas ☺️
Liz Marie, I LOVE your home. And I also love your ideas and decorating style. I beleive your kitchen is my favorite kitchen in all the world! As far as inspiring, yes, you have done that for me. The cottage potting area in the dining room got me motivated. I look forward to your blog all the time. However, I do sometimes get tired just reading about your decorating adventures. But, I’m old, so there’s that.
I think I understand the question and also part of the answer, at least in my case! I have always had a creative eye and total passion to decorate, rearrange, and repurpose, even when I was little. Not even optional, I have been a serial re-arranger! But many family and friends do not share the gift/curse/urge, and think I have a screw loose! To me, anything else seems a bit static, dull and uninteresting, while, to them, my style is chaotic. Here’s to the power of to each his or her own! Vive la difference! I’m thankful that I have moved so many times because I got to experience so many options, and I absolutely love your vision and the things you try in your own home.
