Where did the corbel shelves go?

I came on here today to answer a question that I have been getting so much this week & I totally understand why!! You see, a while back when we started actually putting things into our kitchen i.e. kitchen shelves, we installed kitchen shelves only on one side of the sink on the larger wall [See them here]. We used antique corbels that were gorgeous & it all was peachy keen. Kind of. My struggle was with the other side of the sink. For some reason from the beginning I had convinced myself that we couldn’t do shelves on both sides of the sink because the walls were not even, the hood vent was in front of one side, I felt like it just couldn’t work. I didn’t put any more thought in it. I was just convinced that open shelving on both sides of the kitchen window just wasn’t going to work. So, I set out on a journey of trying a million different things to try to make it work & guess what… it just wasn’t working. So, I finally decided that we need to just try it… what could it hurt? & so we did. We tried putting open shelving on both sides of the kitchen sink…

& we ended up loving it. It is useful, practical, pretty, & totally made our kitchen work. The problem? I didn’t have 4 more chippy corbels for the extra shelves so I had to come up with a new plan. The new plan? I ordered [THESE] Ikea shelf brackets. Do I miss the chippy corbels? I do… I loved them. But the best part about these shelves that if I ever find 8 matching corbels that are the perfect size & I feel like changing them, I can switch out the Ikea shelf brackets for the chippy corbels… it’s super easy & the shiplap backsplash makes switching things out super easy. These shelves are hung just like the corbel shelves were [we even used the same top boards], but we just changed to the Ikea brackets.

We have so much to do in this kitchen. So much. That thing hanging above the sink? It’s moving and we are adding more to that, we have to change out the stove, we have to add some things, & to me the kitchen just looks undone, but we have made so much progress & that makes me so excited to make even more! Now to find a stove we love & finish all the little details… you guys, we may have a “finished” kitchen soon!

It’s so funny, & this little project proves it, It’s so easy to stand in your own way especially when it comes to design. How often do you hear “It’s so much harder to design your own spaces than someone else’s.” Often. Because it’s true. It’s so easy to stand in your own way, not be open to every idea, & to look at your spaces with fresh eyes. I would have easily told someone else if this was their kitchen that shelving on both sides of the sink would be a great idea. Easily. But I had to take a journey to get there myself in our own home. That’s the joy of having this blog, that’s the joy of this whole renovation. I get to look back & share the evolution of our home & I get to document all of these changes & I hope that at every step it offers some inspiration for different people in different stages of design. Hopefully the corbel shelves offered a ton of inspiration & hopefully these shelves do as well.
