Refresh-Refresh-Refresh… are yall tired of us refreshing? Or tired of hearing the word refresh? I hope not, because we did it again. Spring is the time where we dust everything off around here. Start over. Plan ahead. Create a blank slate. I love refreshing all of the things & our outdoor spaces are not excluded from that. We plan on spending a lot of time outside, from the finishing up our garden area, to hanging with Grace… so why not have a cute little space outside to kick up your feet?
Now before we dive into our little refresh, we are going to be overhauling our patio area this year (hopefully). It needs a lot of TLC, the patio-pavers are becoming disjointed, in between our patio and driveway there was a landscaped space, that now shrines a dead tree stump. We are still in design mode, so i’ll hold off on all the plans and details until we get a better picture. Nonetheless we found a little nook on this unfinished patio that we wanted to put together a cozy farmhouse patio sitting area.
In order to kick up your feet, you need somewhere to sit, or lay… We found this Woodstock Sectional with Ottoman from Joss & Main (link). Its a great focal point in the space not only with its deep color tones, but is overall volume. This sectional does clearly comes with seat and back cushions, it also comes with outdoor pillows. We weren’t huge fans of the pillows, so we replaced them with pillows we previously had, and ScotchGard Weather Sealed them to keep them safe from the elements. We have had great success with using ScotchGard weather shield in the past, check out our post on “How To Make Any Fabric Outdoor Safe” (Link), if you’ve never used it before. Outside of simply opening the box the sectional came in, there is no setup. Its the perfect size for hosting & for Jose and I to lay on each side of the of the sectional… win-win.
Shade is always a necessity when your relaxing outside. I do my best to limit my time in the sun so its only natural to throw an umbrella (Link) into our little cozy farmhouse patio. I love the look of this umbrella so much from the color, to the drop cloth material, to even the little tassels… If I was looking for some bad luck I would try to bring it inside & add it to our sun room…To anchor it all down, and bring it together, we put this Woven Chevron outdoor rug down. Without the rug, the space, no matter how well you designed it, felt like the sectional and ottoman were just left there… It was disconnected a bit, this rug ties it together, and brings it all together.
I wanted to keep this space calm & relaxing, but as always have that antique farmhouse vibe with all of it’s chippy goodness so I chose to decorate with some antique & vintage items like that large dough bowl, that large green jug, the chippy baskets I picked up at a flea market, & that rusty garden chair. & of course to bring the whole space to life I added GREENS from those lovely lemon trees from my pal Angie who sells them at our shop to those large green ferns I picked up at my local hardware store. I kept it neutral, chippy, & cozy just how I like it! The white screen enclosure in the back were purchased from Amazon (link).

Great pics. I love anything related to farmhouses. I grew up in an old style farmhouse in the Canadian country side.
I’m trying to like this but honestly can’t. It’s completely over done with so much going on. It seems to be staged toward the photo shoot and not focused on the comfort of the people who would use the space.
I love how the fringe of the umbrella works so well with the lattice work on your house and fence! Looks beautiful, I want to sit there!
Im really trying hard to like it, but I just don’t…I am having trouble wrapping my head around some of your recent choices and I feel you’re drifting away from the antique vintage pieces and look. I have always looked forward to new things that you find and add, and recently I just feel overwhelmed by everything being “re done” when personally I loved it like it was….but girl it’s your home and if you love it, then that’s all that matters.

I saw on your Insta Stories that sometimes it’s hard to share your creativity, Liz, because of negativity. I, too, have a hard time sharing my art as I shut down from opinions I know shouldn’t matter. A dear friend of mine said to me that I had to trust that my art was being created to be “gifted” for someone, somewhere, someplace when it’s created from my heart. It’s a gift from God to have creativity whether it’s art or decorating or giving of ones self in any form of creating. I don’t think Tracy said anything unkind. When you post things on the internet there will be differing opinions. Tracy is entitled to her opinion. Is the comment section just for blowing smoke? I doubt she was asking that things like this not be posted. She simply said she didn’t care for how staged it is. The entire home is very staged and that’s okay if that’s what the Galvan’s prefer. Different strokes for different folks.

We are living in the 21st century, where opinions can go either way. I don’t see a problem with people giving an opinion for or against. Personally, I adore Liz, Jose, their fur family and style. I don’t care if it’s staged, but I also don’t see anything wrong with someone giving an honest opinion. Like it or not, it’s life. And this silly business about your mother teaching us not to say anything but nice things is a little dated. Get with the times.
I have to disagree. Of course Tracy is entitled to her opinion. But I don’t see how her comment is any different than if I didn’t like the outfit she was wearing while at the mall and I went up and told her so. She’s wearing it in public for everyone to see, so that would make it ok? I would hope that most people would find that rude.

It’s totally beautiful! I live in the Midwest too and have a question—what do you do with all the pillows/rugs etc when it rains? Even with outdoor labeled stuff it gets kinda gross for me to have soggy pillows—but I just don’t have the room/energy to pull them off every time weather is bad. What do y’all do?

I’ve been following your blog for a long time (since 2 houses before your farmhouse), you were so talented back then but it’s amazing to see how far you have come, and where your design style is today. You are my favourite blog to look at (every day!) and get so many fresh ideas and inspiration from you. My heart goes out to you when you are down and discouraged at times, try not to let people’s negative opinions get you down, you are doing such a great job, everything you do looks just perfect to me and I love it all, I wish I could make my home look as good as yours does 🙂

“Kindness is in Our Power, Even When Fondness is Not”. In a world FULL of so much hatred and negativity a kind word or no comment at all goes a long way. These types of rude comments are why this world has gotten the way it is, it’s sad!

72 years of living and all the observations I’ve gather about folks have taught this old woman that the BEST way to handle unkind remarks and negative comments is to simply IGNORE them. Give the unkind person maybe up to 5 minutes consideration, and then move on.
Responding to unkind remarks and negative comments is like throwing fat wood and kindling on a smoldering ember… don’t feed that smoldering ember and fan any little flames that erupt.
You have a beautiful home that suits you, your family, and your friends (personal and virtual). Enjoy it!!!

While I do feel kindness is always nice, I have to say this post rubs me wrong. Hundreds of dollars worth of plants, a $1200 outdoor sectional among other things…just seems so over the top, show-offy and out of touch with reality.
Kindness and grace are never outdated. How sad some think the advent of the internet did away with common courtesy.
For those who get “rubbed the wrong way” by what someone else spent creating a patio for their home…well, it’s time to calmmmm downnnnn. When I see something on the blog that I want to recreate and go into sticker shock I find it amazing how many affordable alternatives their are out there. It’s a gorgeous patio! And Im going to use her amazing ideas to inspire my own gorgeous patio on my own budget?
