I love a good cheap alternative to anything. I mean who doesn’t like to save money? Well, I’m here today to share a hot deal with you. A lot of you have commented on the pendant in our kitchen & we actually bought another one for our guest bedroom this week & I gave it a little makeover so I decided to blog it today because I can’t keep this awesome deal to myself. I got this light from Home Depot for less than $30 & they are great on their own, but I have customized the two we on and chalk paint farmhouse lights have such a cool look to them.
Want to know something funny? When I blogged our spring guest bedroom last week we didn’t have a light fixture in it! haha just a hole in the ceiling. You can look back at the spring guest bedroom blog post [here] & see how I never showed the ceiling. Now we have this lovely matte black farmhouse light in there & I love it. Here is the light from Home Depot that is less than $30…
Β It’s great in the brushed nickel, but I wanted to put my own twist on it for the guest bedroom. I decided to use black chalk paint [Maison Blanche Wrought Iron] to paint the light fixture & I am kind of pleased how it turned out…
I paired it with an antique style bulb just like I did in our kitchen. I love the matte look & how it fits in with our little room. & I love how it ties in with all the other black accents in the room.
I was actually surprised at how many layers the light fixture needed. I guess it’s because it’s metal, but I had to do about 4 thin layers on the light to cover the entire fixture. After it dried I decided not to wax or seal the chalk paint so we just hung it up in our guest bedroom….
The antique style bulb isn’t super bright, but it adds a soft glow to the room in the dark & I think it’s the perfect amount of light for a romantic glow. I’m just obsessed with these bulbs & the look. They may not be for everybody, but they work in our house just great. You can find these bulbs at any hardware store, & I bought mine at Home Depot.
Overall I’m really happy with our $30 light fixture & I think it fits our little guest room perfectly. What do you think of our chalk paint farmhouse light fixture? Those slick surfaces for sure do better with a thin coat or two first, then slathering it on π Love the deep black!! Great makeover. Love the vintage bulbs too π

I did the same thing with one of those Home Depot lights… I added a long pole to the wire so it would hang low over my dining room table. I love yours in black… it is perfect! I love your blog Liz… one of my favorites!

I love what you have done with the farmhouse light. Painting it black instead of leaving it the bright silver was wonderful. Let’s talk bulbs….I am a huge fan of the Edison bulb (I know, not enough light), but it is really working this great light. This is a quick and easy DIY project. Thanks for sharing.
