This is literally my 3rd coffee table makeover post in the past few weeks. I can’t help it.. I must save all the sad coffee tables! This coffee table makeover I did was actually for my friend Christine which I’ve recently showed you her corner gallery wall & the bench we gave a makeover as well. We were doing all these projects to give her things new life before we packed her up & got her ready for her big move to Japan. She leaves this week. I’m pretending that she’s not leaving me, but I know if I don’t blog this table makeover now, I will just cry if I do it after she leaves. This military life is a good life, but saying goodbye to friends never get’s easier. I’m thankful that even though we will be in different countries we will find time to talk & be a part of each other’s lives. Someone grab me the tissues! Let’s get to this lovely chalkboard top coffee table makeover.

Recognize this table? You should! This is the same coffee table we have that we recently gave a makeover to as well. In case you forgot here is how our coffee table is looking now after our makeover…

We actually got the same exact coffee tables from World Market.. it’s kind of like the grownup version of friendship bracelets. The coffee table is the Madera Coffee table & it’s seriously a great little coffee table. I gave mine a makeover because I craved a change & something new. Christine’s coffee needed a makeover because after a few years of having it with a toddler in the house, the top of the table had seen some better days.

DIY chalkboard top coffee table:

– Clean the top of the coffee table thoroughly & remove any dirt, food, & anything that will make the paint surface uneven.

– Patch any holes and sand the surface if you want a completely even top. I did not have to patch or sand the table. There were a couple corners that were “lifting”, but the seasoned chalkboard finish made all of that disappear.

– You can choose to prime at this point, but I chose to just start painting the coffee table with the chalkboard paint & a paint brush. You can use a chalkboard spray paint, but I am more comfortable using a paintbrush with the paint for nice, even, thick coats. I purchased my chalkboard paint at Lowes, but any craft store should have it.

-I painted 3 coats on this table, allowing it to dry completely between each coat. Chalkboard paint is durable & you can judge how many coats your project needs.

– After I was finished painting the table with the chalkboard paint it was time to season the coffee table. To do this I rubbed chalk all in one direction top to bottom & than wiped off with a dry towel. I then rubbed chalk in the other direction & wiped with a towel again. Seasoning helps your chalk drawings not to be permanent & to easily be wiped off.

The chalkboard top is the perfect solution for Christine and her family. The paint is durable & hid any imperfections on the top of the table & also if any future damage happens to the top of the table, a quick coat of chalkboard paint can fix it right up.
