The Need for a DIY Vanity

Up until recently, I have been using an antique desk in my makeup vanity closet. It worked for a while, but the antique desk wasn’t cutting it anymore. The drawers would stick & be hard to open, there was not enough storage, & it just wasn’t practical. Having looked for a while for the “perfect vanity” The hubs and I decided to build one ourselves. We want it to be easy, cheap, sturdy, & with lots of storage. Not too much to ask right?

I came up with some plans for a DIY glass top makeup vanity {You can choose glass, we chose plexiglass because of it’s durability} The see-through top would allow me to store all of my beauty items in plain sight so it would be easy to use & I would be more organized.

Now of course these photos are taken in our master bathroom where there is only a small window in the shower {Yah, I know} Also, it needs one more coat of paint, but I just couldn’t wait to show you this lovely desk that I have been enjoying…

The DIY

Step 1.

This desk was really easy to make & only took a couple of hours to complete…

We measured the inside of our closet to get the exact measurements for vanity.

We built a frame and placed a piece of plywood on top to make box with an open bottom. This is going to be used as the base of the vanity and where the legs will attach.

Step 2.

Next, build another frame just like the previous frame, except this frame will be without one of the long sides of the rectangle. This is going to be placed on top of the box build in the previous step, and used to lift the plexiglass to allow for storage.

Placing dividers on the top frame from the previous step is used for organization and also for support to allow the plexiglass that will be placed on top to be supported equally and to prevent dipping of the plexiglass.

Step 3.

Once all items are fastened the legs can be attached.

We then placed the vanity into the closet.

For an accent piece we attached molding to the lower box frame to break up the look of the wood and also to conceal the screws on the front facing side of the vanity.

Step 4.

Lastly, place the plexiglass on top vanity. Based on the weight of the plexiglass we decided not to fully attach the plexiglass to the vanity to allow for a thorough cleaning of the top and bottom.

We did purchase plexiglass adhesive to be placed along the top of the frame and dividers if we later choose to fully attach the plexiglass. So far, the plexiglass has not moved or created any problems being not attached.

The Goods

The plastic containers were purchased at the dollar store. I was seriously impressed with the quality of them & how much they held. Being a hoarder of more than just furniture & even though I hardly ever wear more than concealer, eyeliner, mascara, & bronzer this is all just to fun to play with on special occasions to get rid of it 😉

 

This post may have been a little premature because I still need to sand and do another layer of paint on the legs, but I just couldn’t wait to show you! You may be wondering where I sit. Well, for now, I have been using a stool that we just had lying around because I have yet to find the perfect chair for the DIY vanity closet, but I will update you on that later when I find one.
